It seems like the shisha-bug is spreading far and wide and the latest celebrity to catch it is Girls Aloud’s Kimberly Walsh.

Fellow band mate Sarah took a snap of the singer backstage at their Manchester show from their latest tour taking a drag.

Naturally the photo was re-tweeeted and met with appreciation by shisha fans.

Kimberly was smoking a fruit-flavoured eShisha which is a nicotine-free ‘e-cigarette.’

Cheryl Cole is also a fan of the shisha sticks, posting a picture of them in anticipation for a relaxed evening.

Made in Chelsea’s Hugo Taylor and his girlfriend Natalie Joel are other celebrities that enjoy smoking the healthier and safer electronic cigarette.

“Shisha doesn’t involve any tobacco.”

“Smoking cigarettes is far worse for you.”

“Shisha is a lot more harmful.”

These are all things I have heard being said before. It seems there are a lot of myths or inaccurate information surrounding the topic of smoking and I guess it is time to clear some of it up.

When I first started smoking, I thought the first statement was true and a lot of people are misinformed about the topic.

Firstly, shisha does involve tobacco but a special kind called Mu‘assel and it is a sweetened fruit-based tobacco typically quite sticky and looks a lot different compared to the content found inside a packet of Golden Virginia.

Of course, we all know that smoking any type of tobacco will cause some harm to your health. Whether it is more dangerous than smoking cigarettes depends on a number of factors such as how much you smoke and how often.

In general terms, they are rather similar. A shisha session typically lasts between 45minutes to an hour, in which time a range of roughly 50 to 200 inhalations take place. Therefore, in a session hat lasts for around an hour, a user will consume about 100 times the smoke of one cigarette. On the other hand, those who smoke cigarettes typically do not smoke just the one per day, so the average consumption of smoke can be quite similar.

The best rule is to be safe and sensible with your smoking habits and after all it is a lifestyle choice. Shisha is a practice of enjoyment, socialising and relaxing and those who participate in the activity have every right to do so. The same goes for those who smoke cigarettes.

So the next time somebody tries to preach how one is more harmful than the other, forget the facts and figures because both can be enjoyed sensibly and is the individual’s own choice. Respect for other’s choices is key…and a drink to keep you hydrated!

Just last weekend I visited a shisha lounge in Derby in celebration of a friend’s birthday. It was a chance for old and new friends to gather and have a good old natter. That’s old friends who are accustomed to the practice of shisha and new friends who have never sat in front of one before.

It was a learning curve to say the least. It can be a daunting thing for the first time. You enter the lounge to find a number of cliques sitting comfortably and smoking shisha like it’s the air they breathe. My friends were pumped at the beginning – ready to experience a little taste of the exotic and to finally try out what we had been going on about all day. It was a bit of a different story when we sat down. They froze in terror, despite the fact that one of the owners went out of his way to create three lovely and fruity flavours at our request. Six people trying to tell the terrified newbie what to do all at once isn’t such a great tactic. So here is some good and applicable advice for shisha first-timers or shisha lovers who can learn and lock away the information for a time they may need to introduce
someone to the practice.

One of the worst fears that pops into many peoples’ minds, is the fear of choking. Most of the time when this happens, it is because there is too much coal. This causes the smoke to become harsh. Sometimes the foil burns but this can easily be sorted out at a lounge. Just ask for assistance! More than likely they will be willing to help you out and will quickly rectify the problem. Sometimes they are scared of what it will taste like. Flavour is subjective but go with the tastes that you feel you will like. If it’s your first time, do not order the one with the bizarre, cryptic name. (Really, been there, done that. It was awful.) Again if you tell the workers what you like they can whip up something that you will probably enjoy.

If you’re taking a beginner, advise them not to inhale excessively at first. They will  probably end up feeling light headed quite soon and will ruin the over all experience for them. It may also be a good idea to advice them not to eat a hearty meal before the session because it will contribute to an unpleasant feeling of feeling ill. Most importantly, just don’t over think it. The experience will be ruined and all the fun that shisha brings to the table will evaporate. Keep the excitement in the experience and happy smoking!

The art of shisha is slowly seeping into the rigid culture of Europe, infusing it with an alluring exoticness that is undeniably enticing.

Shisha lounges are springing up all over the UK, with the number increasing every year. The demand for them is increasing and particularly among young adults. It’s becoming a popular social pastime and one that is different form just smoking a cigarette. It is something that you do with friends and family whereas the same cannot be envisioned over a fag.

The concept of shisha is thought to have originated in India during the Mughal rule (that’s roughly between the years 1526–1857) and lounges were designed only for the wealthy. It was a matter of status and it is not uncommon to see shisha lounges in cafes in the Middle East. But now it is a reward for everybody. Just from 2000 to 2004, about 200 shisha lounges opened in the UK.

Many, and I admit, myself, have ventured to London’s Edgware Road because it is known for the many shisha spots, most of which appeared in the early 1980s. However, back then, it was almost controversial to be seen at these ‘notorious’ hangouts. Despite this, more recently, these spots are becoming increasingly popular, especially with students and tourists.

There is a reason for the sudden burst in the number of lounges and ironically, it is the smoking ban proposed in 2007. According to the British Heart Foundation, the indoor smoking ban has indirectly caused the growth of shisha bars in Britain.

In fact, statistics found by the British Heart Foundation show that there are around 600 bars now from the estimated 200 at the time of the ban.

Unfortunately, with increasing medical warnings over the dangers of shisha, the government is now looking to crackdown on the practice. Councils in Leicester for example, are considering setting a licensing requirement. All over the country, councils are trying to control the shisha trade more rigorously. This is due to the overall plan to cut down all type of smoking for health reasons.

No strict legislation has been enforced as of yet but what is certain is that clamping down on shisha will do some degree of damage to businesses and perhaps even the economy if prices are forced to go up. Either way, a new wave of bohemian youngsters and die-hard shisha lovers are keeping the lounges very much alive.

In typical British fashion, the weather has turned Antarctica-cold this month and for shisha lovers, this may be the time to retrieve the home set, unless you would rather risk smoking outside and leaving with a severe case of frostbite. If you don’t have one, invest in one. It’s the perfect way to spend quality time with friends and family in the comfort of your own home. But first, it may be useful to know about the instrument itself and all the dos and don’ts of setting it up.

Before you start smoking or even putting the apparatus together, it is important to ensure that the pipe is thoroughly clean and dry. Next you will want to fill the glass bottom with water. Do so, so that about 1 inch of the pipe is fully submerged in the water and that there is empty space above where the smoke will cool and gather.

The type of tobacco used in shisha is different from normal tobacco. It consists of normal tobacco leaves, with molasses, which in basic terms is a type of honey with squashed fruit depending on the flavour. It is the juice is the tobacco that makes it moist. When removing some from its packet, remember to mix the flavoured tobacco
so that you are not left with any large sums or dry or wet bits. The tobacco needs to be placed in the clay bowl with all holes covered up.

If you can get you hand on a funnel head do so and be sure to use coco nut coals, these are hard to set-up but provide the best smoking experience.

The metal tray needs to be attached to the top of the pipe with the gromet on top of it. On top if this will sit the clay bowl after it has been covered with a layer of foil, making sure that it sits tightly on top of the bowl. Using a toothpick, punch a few holes into the layer.

Light your desired choice of charcoal and wait until it is glowing before placing on top of the foil. Next connect the hose to the side of the pipe making sure the rubber hose seal is air tight and then you are ready to begin smoking.

It is generally good practice to take small sucks of the pipe to begin with so that the tobacco heats up gradually. Have you ever taken a drag to find that it hits your throat and results in doubling over with an uncontrollable cough? That’s probably the holes in the foil blocking up so it’s a good idea to re-punch the holes when changing the coal.

You’re ready to kick back with your loved ones and have a good natter over some shisha. Just remember to have a drink by your side to avoid dehydration, which any type of smoking can cause. Moreover, it will help with keeping the flavour alive on your tongue. After all, you don’t want to wake up with a ‘hookah hangover.’
